What is a “coastal Grandmother”?

The coastal Grandmother aesthetic is a popular fashion trend that combines the preppiness of Martha’s Vineyard and the laid-back vibes of the Malibu-Santa Barbara lifestyle.

Inspired by the iconic Diane Keaton in Nancy Meyers’ Something's Gotta Give, the coastal Grandmother is not just a fashion trend, it’s a lifestyle blend of slow living, a laid-back attitude, and the confidence of being comfortable in your own skin.

Think breezy barefoot walks on the beach after dinner, or sipping a glass of white wine with a book in hand as you rock on a seaside porch swing. It’s a carefree, calming, comforting vibe that’s both effortless and timelessly chic.

The best part about this style is that it’s super easy to copy; you don’t need to live near the beach or have grandkids to nail the coastal Grandmother look. This fashionable aesthetic features a light neutral color palette, and loose, breathable fabrics that are comfortable, modest, and easy to wear — it’s classic ocean-side minimalism meets effortless elegance.

I won’t lie, it wasn’t my intention to create a coastal Grandmother look. I styled this summer outfit out of pure comfort and a little bit of laziness. It was one of those days where you need to run errands and you want nothing more than to stay home cozied up in your pajamas. So in an effort to get dressed while still staying comfortable, I paired a loose, cropped sweater with my favorite linen wide-leg pants and crisscross slide sandals. This neutral summer outfit is slightly fitted, yet oversized and breezy, which totally nails that effortlessly chic coastal Grandmother vibe. Even though I did style this as a summer outfit, you can easily re-wear this for warmer fall days!
